Overcoming barriers to megaproject success – new Mace report

train-8302635_1280

A new industry report from Mace looks at the changing landscape of major programme management, revealing how collaborative delivery models, robust governance structures and integrated teams are being harnessed to meet the demands of projects now routinely exceeding $10 billion.

There are more than 11,000 megaprojects and 250 giga-projects currently underway across the globe. But as these projects grow in size and ambition, so too do the complexities and risks that threaten their successful delivery.

The report makes use of a dataset of more than 5,000 projects and features interviews with industry leaders. It investigates where these multi-billion dollar programmes are taking shape and identifies the sectors driving the greatest demand, such as transport, energy and urban development. It pinpoints the countries encountering the most significant barriers to effective delivery.

Notable successes include the venues for the London 2012 Games, Peru’s Reconstruction programme and Canada’s Go Expansion initiative. These illustrate how innovative approaches can overcome entrenched challenges and set new benchmarks for major programme delivery.

The report also looks at the use of digital twins, predictive analytics and real-time dashboards, highlighting how organisations like the Hong Kong Development Bureau are leveraging these tools to detect risks early, optimise schedules and enhance transparency throughout the project lifecycle.
